Everyone who knows me knows that I like device convergence. A few weeks ago, I wrote about a phone-GPS-workout-watch. Here is one for you car: A full-fledged GPS combined with a media-player and a 20G hard drive.
As the referenced article mentions, Commodore is a name from the past. The Commodore 64 was a great entry-level machine in its day. Unfortunately, Commodore didn’t innovate well enough (the Amiga was nice and innovative, but didn’t sell well enough). The brand was sold a few years ago, and I haven’t heard much about them lately. As you may imagine, my ears perked up when I saw this. They have two other products being released, but this is the only one I think they have a chance at.
The article is low on details, but it has a nice picture. The device has a 20G hard drive, which while not huge, is decent sized. I don’t know how big the maps and such are, but since most systems can run from a DVD, I’ll assume that you will have 15G or so of drive space left over. You can store video, pictures or MP3/WMA files on that space, and the Windows CE system will play them back. It understands DRM9 so it is compatible with most music services. The 3.6 inch touchscreen is perfect for this sort of thing. The GPS driving instructions talk to you like many of the higher-end GPS systems. I just hope that the voice is good.
One other cool thing about this box is that it can show you routes for either a car or a bicycle., which means that I can probably use that for walking somewhere too. Directions for a motor vehicle must follow 1-way streets other traffic rules. A walker doesn’t need to worry about 1-way streets and such, and can even cut between buildings. I have no idea how well this feature will work, but I’d love to try it out.
This puppy is going to be formally announced at the upcoming International Consumer Electronics Show, or iCES.
